The Hellenic Initiative Australia is a national, not-for-profit organisation established in 2015 to respond to the profound social impact of the prolonged economic crisis in Greece.
Australia was the first diaspora community to form a local chapter of The Hellenic Initiative, which was co-founded in 2012 by Darwin-born Andrew N Liveris AO, former Chairman and CEO of The Dow Chemical Company.
It is a unique organisation, uniting and empowering Greek Australians and Philhellenes across Australia to work together for a common cause: supporting Greece’s recovery and renewal.
Since 2015, The Hellenic Initiative Australia has committed more than AU$600,000 to programs in Greece, thanks to the generosity of individuals donors and organisations throughout Australia.
A further AU$1 million of in-kind support has been pledged by Australian host companies through their generous support for young Greeks participating in our Internship Program.
Through our partner charities in Greece, The Hellenic Initiative Australia has helped provide millions of meals and in-kind goods and services to people in need, supported the homeless, equipped regional hospitals to provide lifesaving care for children and funded preventive and specialist medical care for people living in remote islands.
Our Volunteering Program, launched in 2017, has provided all Australians travelling in Greece an opportunity to be a part of Australia’s relief efforts on the ground with our partner charities.
Through events held across the country, The Hellenic Initiative Australia has raised awareness of the ongoing hardship and challenges caused by the crisis in Greece.
The Hellenic Initiative Australia is committed to increasing Australian participation in this global effort to build a more sustainable future for Greece.
